Sprawling across 109,000 acres, Fort Knox is a large Army post that spans across three counties. It is located between Elizabethtown and Louisville. Fort Knox was built in 1918, but it dates back to 1861, when fortifications were constructed here during the Civil War. Fort Knox is home to the United States Bullion Depository, which was established by the US Department of the Treasury in 1937.
The General George Patton Museum of Leadership was established at Fort Knox in 1949. The museum, which is free and open to the public, contains a large collection of General George Patton’s personal effects, which date from his childhood until the end of WWII. A gift store is located within the museum as well.
Fort Knox area apartments can be found in nearby Elizabethtown, with is 15 miles south of the base. Louisville is within commuting distance, just 35 miles north. Nearby communities include Radcliff, which is on the west side of Fort Knox, along with Flaherty, Vine Grove, and Rineyville. Shepherdsville is on the northeast side of the base, along with Brooks and Hillview.
