Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, ME

Located in Kittery, Maine, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is near the New Hampshire border and the historic seaport city of Portsmouth. Established under President John Adams in 1800, this is the oldest Navy shipyard still in operation. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There’s an on-going boundary dispute between New Hampshire and Maine over the shipyard, which is located on Seavey’s Island in the Piscataqua River. While the Supreme Court dismissed New Hampshire’s most recent complaint asserting that the island is within the border of New Hampshire, that didn’t stop a 2006 joint resolution in the New Hampshire House of Representatives claiming sovereignty over the island and the base.

Kittery is a terrific place for an apartment near Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. This historic gem was settled in the early 1600s and incorporated in 1647, making it the oldest incorporated town in the state of Maine. It contains gorgeous historic architecture, including the Pepperrell House, built in 1733. The John Bray House, the oldest house still standing in the state, was built in 1662. This seaside town is a very popular tourist destination.

If you prefer a larger city, Portsmouth is just south of the shipyard. English colonists settled here in 1630 and the city was incorporated in 1653. Portsmouth was Paul Revere’s destination in 1774, when he warned of an impending landing by British troops. Today, this charming New England city retains its historic charm and much of its architecture. Be sure to visit the Governor Langdon House, built in 1784, the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, first built in 1771, and the beautiful restored historic homes in Strawbery Banke Museum, the site of one of Portsmouth’s earliest settlements.
