Fort Jackson, SC

As the US entered World War I in 1917, Camp Jackson was established in South Carolina. Today, Fort Jackson is a major Basic Combat Training center, where about half of all of the Army’s recruits are trained. Each year, the post trains more than 36,000 for basic training and 8,000 for advanced training.

Fort Jackson is located on 52,000 acres in Columbia. There are over 3,500 active-duty soldiers assigned to the installation, while an additional 3,500 civilians are employed by Fort Jackson. The post contains the Soldier Support Institute, the Drill Sergeant School, the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Center, and the National Center for Credibility Assessment, where about 10,000 students attend courses each year.

As South Carolina’s largest city, Columbia is a thriving metro area, home to more than 130,000 people. It is located in the heart of South Carolina near the confluence of the Saluda and Broad Rivers. Fort Jackson is located on the east side of the city, just south of Sesquicentennial State Park. As you search for apartments near Fort Jackson, concentrate on the towns and communities on the east side of Columbus, including Northeast Arcadia Lakes, Dentsville, Woodfield, and Forest Acres.

For those who prefer to remain in the city, Columbia has several neighborhoods between University of South Carolina in Midtown and Fort Jackson, including Melrose Heights, Heathwood, Shandon, Old Shandon, Waverly, Rosewood, and Hollywood-Rose Hill.
