Fort Belvoir US Army Reserve, VA

Fort Belvoir is a unique location, and the fascinating history behind this site makes this US Army Reserve base something special. William Fairfax built the 2,200-acre plantation, Belvoir Manor, in the 1730s. During the late 1600s, the land was granted to Thomas Ousley, who was later buried on the property – archeologists are still unable to locate the grave or the site of his house, but the ruins of the Fairfax plantation home are still located on the property. The Belvoir Mansion and the Fairfax family grave site are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A fire nearly destroyed the plantation in 1783, and British shells destroyed what was left during the War of 1812. The property changed hands several times and was forgotten after the Civil War. In 1915, the US Army began using Belvoir as a training facility and named it Camp Belvoir. At the start of World War I, a semi-permanent cantonment was established and named Camp A.A. Humphreys. The post was renamed in the 1930s to honor the former Belvoir Plantation.

Today, Fort Belvoir serves as the headquarters for several agencies, including the Defense Logistics Agency and the Defense Contract Audit Agency. Fort Belvoir is also home to the Virginia National Guard’s 29th Infantry Division (Light), the 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power), the 902nd Military Intelligence Group, and several others.

To find an apartment in the Fort Belvoir area, look in nearby Mt. Vernon, Newington, and Lorton. Other towns and communities within commuting distance include Groveton, Springfield, Alexandria, Woodbridge, and Lake Ridge.
