Fort Eustis Military Reserve, VA

The land that Fort Eustis now occupies dates back to colonial times, when it was known as Mulberry Island. The area was settled shortly after Jamestown in 1607. Colonists had a difficult time in the colony and prepared to abandon it in 1610 during what was called the “Starving Time.” Just as they prepared to leave, a ship from England brought fresh provisions and they were able to stay. Among those colonists was John Rolfe – the man who would later marry Pocahontas and save the Virginia Colony from financial ruin by cultivating tobacco.

Starting with the early colony onward, Mulberry Island was always considered a strategic military point, but it wasn’t until 1918 that the Army purchased the land during the build-up to WWI. Camp Abraham Eustis became the permanent installation Fort Eustis in 1923. In 2010, Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force Base merged to create Joint Base Langley-Eustis. The base is used for training and is home to the Army Transportation Corps.

Newport News, Virginia was one of the eight original shires of Virginia. This historic city is located along the James River just south of Colonial National Historical Park. The base is roughly 11 miles south of Williamsburg – a historic city and a great location for commuters.
