Armatage Neighborhood
Located directly to the south of popular Lake Harriet is the community of Armatage. Like many area neighborhoods, it was named after a school in the community, Armatage Community School. The school itself was named after Maude Armatage, a community leader and women’s rights activist. The neighborhood was originally considered part of Richfield, but in the 1920s, it officially became part of Minneapolis. Armatage is located in Hennepin County, in the 55410 ZIP code area.
This southwest Minneapolis community extends to 54th Street West on the north, Highway 62 on the south, and Xerxes Avenue on the west. The eastern boundary is created by Logan Avenue South. The neighborhood consists mostly single-family homes, although there area some multi-family residences as well. Located near the center of the neighborhood is a community park, Armatage Park. The Armatage Neighborhood Center and the Armatage Elementary School are also located there.
The surrounding area offers a dozen or so other parks and lakes within a short distance, including the Wood Lake Nature Center. Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun are also just short drives away and offer plenty of amenities and activities. To the northwest of the community, off the northern border created by West 54th Street, is the Edina Country Club, where residents can get in a round of golf.
On the other side of Highway 62, the neighborhood’s southern boundary is Fairview Southdale Hospital. Just south of the hospital is Southdale Shopping Center, which offers major stores like Macy’s, Marshall’s, and JC Penney. Residents will also find more than 120 specialty retailers, such as Banana Republic, J. Crew, The Apple Store, Coach, Aveda, and H & M. A large AMC Theatre is also on site. Southdale Shopping Center is convenient and could easily be a one-stop-shop for a day of family fun while shopping, dining, and seeing a good flick.
