Bryant Neighborhood
The small, residential neighborhood of Bryant is located in southern Minneapolis, in the 55409 zip code area. William Cullen Bryant, a distinguished American poet who lived in the 19th century, is this Hennepin County’s namesake. Fully developed by the 1930s, this community became part of Minneapolis in 1887. As of 2000, nearly 2,800 people called the community of Bryant home.
The boundaries of the Bryant neighborhood are 38th Street East on the north, 42nd Street East on the south, I-35W on the west, and Chicago Avenue on the east. Lining the streets of Bryant, you’ll find primarily single-family homes, but there are a few multi-family dwellings scattered throughout the community, as well — primarily to the northwest. As of 1999, the average income of Bryant residents was slightly higher than the city of Minneapolis overall, at just over $40,300.
Near the northeast boundary of Bryant, you’ll find Phelps Park, which features a unique gateway sculpture by artist Michael Bigger. Meant to reflect the theme of togetherness, this work of art is a fitting addition to this tight-knit community. Martin Luther King Park is another sizable park in the Bryant area, located just on the other side of the neighborhood’s I-35W boundary.
Bryant is conveniently located along a major interstate and is close to some excellent outdoor recreation areas. Popular Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet are located to the west. These lakes are a prime Minneapolis attraction and offer tons of amenities, including walking and biking trails, beaches, playing fields, and much more. A few miles to the southeast are Lake Nokomis Park, Hiawatha Lake Park, and Hiawatha Golf Course.
Bryant is also within 10 minutes of Uptown, which offers plenty of dining, entertainment, and shopping opportunities for Minneapolis residents. This trendy neighborhood is popular among all ages but caters especially to a young, intellectual crowd.
