Bryn Mawr Neighborhood

You can see why a 2010 issue of Minnesota Monthly named Bryn Mawr one of the best places to live in the state. This western Minneapolis neighborhood offers the best of both worlds. It is bordered by parkland or water on all sides, but is also intersected by a major roadway (I-394) and offers a convenient commercial district. Bryn Mawr is bounded by Bassett Creek and Theodore Wirth Park to the north and Cedar Lake Park to the south. Theodore Worth Park also creates the community’s western boundary, and it is bounded on the east by Bryn Mawr Meadows.

The neighborhood takes its name from a like-named community park and elementary school in the area. You might recognize the name Bryn Mawr, which means “big hill,” from the city in Pennsylvania, which is where some of the original neighborhood investors were from. The community is located in Hennepin County, in the 55405 zip code area.

As of 2000, there were just over 2,660 residents in Bryn Mawr. The average household income as of 1999 was over $30,000, more than the average yearly earnings of the Minneapolis population as a whole. Many of the community’s residents are executives and professionals, and you’ll find that many residents work from home, mixing the residential with the commercial.

In the nearby Wirth Parkland, you’ll find the tranquil Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden. To the east of the Bryn Mawr Meadows, you’ll find the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, Dunwoody College of Technology and the Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

Hiking and biking enthusiasts will enjoy the ample trails that run along bordering Cedar Lake. Further to the south are Lake Calhoun, a popular destination for visitors and residents, as well as the hip Uptown area, which offers plenty of unique shopping and dining experiences.

Schools in the neighborhood include Anwatin Middle School at 256 Upton Avenue South.
