Elliot Park Neighborhood

One of the oldest neighborhoods in Minneapolis, Elliot Park is a community with a rich heritage. Just south of the downtown area, this neighborhood extends to Fifth Street South and Fifth Avenue South on the north and 18th Street East on the south. It is bounded by Fourth Avenue South on the west and Highway 55 on the east. Interstates 35W and 94 both run past the neighborhood, connecting residents to the rest of the Twin Cities area. The zip code for Elliot Park is 55415, in Hennepin County.

Like many Minneapolis neighborhoods, Elliot Park was named after the neighborhood park, which in turn was named for the man who donated the land (physician and farm owner Dr. Joseph Elliot). The park can be found at Elliot Avenue South and East 14th Street, neighboring North Central University. Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota campus are within a few minutes of Elliot Park, bordering the river to the west and east, respectively. The Hennepin County Medical Center also borders the community park.

In the community’s earlier days – the late 19th and early 20th century – many mansions were built here. However, over time these spacious homes were converted into apartments as the economic climate changed and more residents came to the area.

In addition to the college campuses and medical center, Elliot Park is within walking distance of the downtown area, which offers limitless options for culture, entertainment, dining, and shopping. Among the major attractions are the Target Center, First Avenue and 7th Street Entry, Hennepin Center for the Arts, Minneapolis Central Library, the Guthrie Theater, and Mill City Museum.

Sports fans will be happy to be within a few minutes of Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins MLB team, and the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, proud home of the Minnesota Vikings NFL team.
