Nokomis Neighborhood
Nokomis is a large neighborhood in south Minneapolis that consists of 11 smaller communities. These communities include Morris Park, Diamond Lake, Keewaydin, Field, Regina, Page, Hale, Northup, Wenonah, Minnehaha, and Ericsson. Nokomis is situated within Hennepin County and is composed of the 55406, 55407, 55409, 55417, 55419, and 55423 zip code areas.
Lake Nokomis – the community’s namesake – is one of three sailing lakes in the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes (along with Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet.) Lake Nokomis is an ideal summer destination for Nokomis residents, offering sailing and canoeing, two public beaches, ball diamonds, playing fields, walking and biking paths, fishing docks, a playground system, and concessions, among other amenities. You can rent watercraft at nearby Wheel Fun Rentals, but many residents race their own sailboats on weekends at Lake Nokomis. A great deal of parkland also borders the river, located to the east of the Nokomis community.
To the immediate north of Lake Nokomis and Lake Nokomis Park are Lake Hiawatha and Hiawatha Lake Park. This area also features Hiawatha Golf Course, an 18-hole, Par-73 regulation course. Hiawatha Golf Course caters to every skill level, offering junior golf programs, as well as lessons and leagues for adults.
The Nokomis neighborhoods are also ideal for frequent flyers, because the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is located just to the south. Here you’ll also find Fort Snelling National Cemetery, State Park, and Golf Course. The Minneapolis VA Medical Center is also located in the area at 1 Veterans Drive.
Nokomis is an ideal neighborhood for aspiring college students, as well. The University of Minnesota campus is located only a few miles to the north. On the other side of the river, to the northeast, are the University of St. Thomas, Macalester College, Hamline University, and St. Catherine University.
