Calhoun Isles Neighborhood
The Calhoun Isles neighborhood encompasses Lake of the Isles, Lake Calhoun, and Cedar Lake. These lakes, especially Lake Calhoun, are some of the most popular visitor and resident attractions in Minneapolis. Lake Calhoun is the largest of the Chain of Lakes and offers the most amenities, including three beaches, fishing docks, walking and biking trails, picnic areas, playing fields, public restrooms, and pay parking lots. Of course, if you live in Calhoun Isles, these beautiful recreational areas may all well be within walking distance. Other recreational areas in the Calhoun Isles neighborhood include Wirth Park, Kenwood Park, Bryn Mawr Meadows, and the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden.
The neighborhood is bordered by Glenwood Avenue and Wirth Park on the north and East 36th Street and Lake Calhoun’s southern boundary on the south. A small chunk of the neighborhood extends to West 38th Street on the southwest. France Avenue South constitutes Calhoun Isles’ western boundary, and South Lyndale Avenue creates the community’s eastern border. Calhoun Isles is located in Hennepin County and includes zip codes 55403, 55405, 55408, and 55416.
The average income in this upper-middle-class neighborhood is well above the city of Minneapolis as a whole. Other than parkland and lakes, much of this area is residential, and the beautiful houses on tree-lined streets reflect the affluent nature of their residents. Although you’ll see a few newer homes scattered about Calhoun Isles, the vast majority of the houses here were built before 1940, which gives the neighborhood a historic, antiquated feel. The average value for a detached, single-family home in this community is more than $707,000, which is quite high for the Minneapolis area. Rental properties are also available in Calhoun Isles, with an average monthly rent of $900 in 2008.
As if all the lakes and parks didn’t provide enough entertainment options, the trendy neighborhood of Uptown is also located within the Calhoun Isles area. Here, you’ll find plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, and taverns — all popular with the sophisticated, intellectual crowd the area caters to.
