Phillips Neighborhood
Phillips is a neighborhood in Minneapolis. The neighborhood is part of the 55404, 55407, and 55408 ZIP codes and is located to the south of Interstate 94, north of Lake Street, west of Hiawatha Avenue, and east of Interstate 35W. Since many of the surrounding roadways are major freeways, Phillips is one of the most accessible neighborhoods in the region.
Homes in Phillips are mostly older residences, with the large majority built prior to 1940. There are, however, many more modern homes in the community. This results in variety throughout the neighborhood. Most of the homes are detached and occupied by their owners. The neighborhood also includes a number of rental properties and multiple-family dwellings.
A major draw to the Phillips neighborhood is medical care. Many come from throughout the region to visit the Children’s Hospital at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. This large medical center provides much of the medical care throughout the surrounding area. With quick access to and from multiple freeways, it is a major provider of emergency medical care. Located in the same area is the Phillips Eye Institute, which is also popular. These medical facilities also generate a large number of jobs, since many they employ live within the Phillips area.
Northeast of Phillips is a popular cultural center. It is situated near Riverside Avenue, less than a mile from the neighborhood. This is where many different offerings from the University of Minnesota are located. Among them is the Ted Mann Concert Hall, which is known for its excellent musical performances throughout the year. Also in the area are art galleries and a number of other cultural and arts-related offerings. Two nearby libraries contain thousands of books and substantial opportunities to conduct research.
