Whittier Neighborhood
Whittier is a neighborhood in Minneapolis. The community is part of the 55404, 55405, and 55408 ZIP codes and is located south of Franklin Avenue, north of Lake Street, east of Lyndale Avenue, and west of Interstate 35W. Homes in the area are quite a bit older than those in other areas in Minneapolis, with the majority built in the early 1900s. While many of the homes are multiple-family dwellings, the neighborhood has a number of detached homes as well. This provides provides an excellent variety of housing options to meet the varying needs of residents.
Many of the residents in Whittier have at least some college education. The area has a lot of young residents, most of whom are single. Few of them have children living at home. Many of those living in the Whittier community are students attending the Minneapolis Institute of Arts or one of the other schools in the area.
The location of the neighborhood provides for access to some excellent attractions situated only a few miles away. One interesting destination is the Children’s Theatre at the Minneapolis Art Institute. This theater provides ongoing shows that are put together by children, most of whom are teenaged thespians.
Less than a mile to the east of the Whittier neighborhood, off Chicago Avenue, are numerous medical facilities. Among them is Abbott Northwestern Hospital. This hospital provides much of the major medical care to residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. This part of town is known for being a destination medical area. Patients travel from around the city to see the talented specialists with practices in this area. A children’s hospital is also located there.
