Small and densely-populated Ramsey County is a buzzing little county in the southeastern region of Minnesota. The county seat and state capital is St. Paul, located on the north bank of the Mississippi River. St. Paul joins its twin, Minneapolis, on its western side. The Twin Cities is one of the largest metro areas in the US.
Sometimes overshadowed by its larger twin, St. Paul has its own claims to fame, such as the Xcel Energy Center, home to the NHL Minnesota Wild. It is home to the Science Museum of Minnesota, which was founded in 1906 and contains many permanent exhibits. The Landmark Center, built in 1894 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, lives up to its name with its easily-recognizable pink granite exterior and hipped red-tile roof adorned in turrets, gables, and dormers. St. Paul is home to several colleges and universities, including Concordia University, Saint Paul College, Saint Catherine University, Hamline University, the University of St. Thomas, and Macalester College.
Recreation is easy to find in St. Paul with several parks, including Highland Park, Wabasha Street Caves, Lake Phalen, Lake Como, and Indian Mounds Park. Ramsey County contains part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, a large conservation area containing 54,000 acres along a 72-mile stretch of the Mississippi River. The area is popular for hiking, cross-country skiing, biking, and several historic sites. Its parks include Fort Snelling State Park and Minnehaha Falls.
In addition to St. Paul, Ramsey County is home to several other cities and towns, including Lauderdale, Maplewood, New Brighton, Arden Hills, Gem Lake, Roseville, Shoreview, and Vadnais Heights.
