Recreation in the East Phalen neighborhood is important to many of the residents in the area. Surrounding the neighborhood are numerous parks and recreational opportunities making it a great place for active residents to live. To the southwest of East Phalen off of Phalen Boulevard is Duluth Playground. The playground is know for the numerous baseball fields that can be found throughout the park. Just in that park there are eight different baseball fields that are used by area youth leagues. It is common to find the fields packed with young baseball players throughout the season. The park also has two tennis courts, a basketball court, and a large playground.
Just east of Duluth Playground is Bruce Vento Trail, a hugely popular area trail. The trail goes throughout the surrounding area and provides miles of pavement for the many walkers, runners, skaters, and cyclists in the area. Most of the trail is uncovered but provides an excellent trail that goes up and around Lake Phalen providing great scenic views while allowing for good distance for the cyclists.
East Phalen is also located close to two major area golf courses providing a little bit of variety for area golfers. The largest of the courses is the furthest away at just about 3 miles to the north off of Maplewood Drive. This is where Keller Golf Course is located. The other course is Phalen Park Golf Course which is located west of East Phalen off of Phalen Drive across from Phalen Park. Both courses are excellent for players of all skill levels and have professional shops that can assist plays with information about the course and with the game of golf in general.
