It extends roughly to Energy Park Drive and West Pierce Butler Route on the north and University Avenue West on the south. Raymond Avenue is its western boundary and North Lexington Parkway is its eastern boundary. Area communities include Langford Park Area, Energy Park, West Frogtown, and South St. Anthony. This large neighborhood has more than 11,820 residents and spans over 2.69 square miles. Most of the single-family homes in this largely residential neighborhood were built before 1940. The income in Hamline-Midway ($45,999) was significantly lower than the Minnesota average ($57,288) as of 2008, which could be due to the large number of college students residing in the area.
The Hamline-Midway neighborhood is smack in the middle of a variety of the Twin Cities’ higher education options. Hamline University is within the neighborhood bounds, and Concordia University is just outside the neighborhood to the south, on the other side of I-94. Southwest of that is the University of St. Thomas, Macalester College, and St. Catherine University. Slightly northwest of Hamline-Midway are the larger University of Minnesota-St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses.
Another feature of the Hamline-Midway neighborhood is the Midway Marketplace. Although technically outside the neighborhood bounds, this retail area borders the community on the south, offering residents easy access to the necessities. Here, you’ll find a Wal-Mart, Target, Borders, UPS Store, and Herberger’s, among other shopping and dining options.
