Picayune, MS Condos for Rent

Picayune has that small town, easy-going atmosphere you’ve been looking for – but it is convenient to New Orleans, Biloxi, and the Gulf Coast beaches. In Picayune, you’ll discover friendly neighborhoods along tree-lined streets, plenty of park space, the 36,000-acre Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge, and the charm of historic buildings. You’ll also discover the nearby John C. Stennis Space Center, terrific shopping, nearby golf courses, area casinos, amazing restaurants, and more.

If you are renting an apartment in Picayune, you’re in good company – Picayune is the largest city in Pearl River County, and it was recently added to the New Orleans metro area. And don’t worry about getting confused when you start searching for Picayune rentals – this is the only city in the world named Picayune. So, how did this city get such an unusual name?

According to the city’s website, the city was originally called Hobolochitto (also a rather unusual name!). The community asked one of its more famous residents, “Pearl Rivers,” to help them rename the city. Pearl Rivers was the pen name of Eliza Jane Poitevent Nicholson, and she was the owner of the New Orleans Daily Picayune – a newspaper named for a Spanish coin. She named the city after her newspaper, which today is called the Times-Picayune.
