Valley View Neighborhood

The Valley View neighborhood is sometimes called Valley View Gardens, probably because many of the neighborhood streets are named after flowers. A hilly, wooded neighborhood of single-family homes and duplexes, it is located west of downtown Columbia, just close enough to the urbanized area for a quick commute.

The Valley View neighborhood is located north of Interstate 70. State Highway E, also known as North Stadium Boulevard, is the eastern boundary of Valley View, and curves to become the northern boundary of the neighborhood as well. The west boundaries of Valley View Gardens are less well defined, but might be said to include Zinnia Drive, Hibiscus Drive, Barberry Avenue, and Sunflower Street. The zip code for the area is 65202.

The single-family houses and duplexes of Valley View are set on suburban-size lots, with plentiful trees and mature landscaping. Some homes do have views, while some are set in more sheltered locations. A small neighborhood park, Valleyview, holds a one-table picnic pavilion set in a well-kept lawn. Baseball and soccer fields are nearby, as well as a basketball court. A half-mile jogging trail is another feature, but this park is tiny compared to Cosmo Park, located three blocks away.

Columbia Cosmopolitan Recreation Area is nicknamed Cosmo Park. In addition to its picnic areas and playgrounds, the largest park in Columbia offers lighted ball fields for many sports. Horseshoe pits, a roller hockey rink, and a remote-control car track are other popular features. Trails of all sorts include fitness trails, walking trails, crushed limestone nature trails, and a challenging single-track mountain bike trail, “Rhett’s Run.”
