South Kansas City Neighborhood

South Kansas City is the large community of Kansas City, which is the biggest city in Missouri. It’s both residential and commercial. It offers a diverse range of housing types and styles from mini-mansions to apartment complexes to mobile homes.

The historically significant Fairyland Park, an old-style amusement park, is in South Kansas City. It was the site of many protests for unfair discrimination until it was finally desegregated in 1964. It shut down within a few decades and never reopened. The land is now being developed, but the site remains.

The Harry S. Truman National Historic Site is within the community. It’s comprised of the long-time home and family farm of the former President of the United States as well as an old, re-done smokehouse, the Grandview post office (which is now a garage), fence posts that mark the farm’s original boundaries, and a restored box wagon.

The 1,769-acre Swope Park is also in South Kansas City. It has the Starlight Theater, the Lakeside Nature Center, equestrian stables, golf courses, and hiking trails. The Kansas City Zoological Park is near Swope Park, and it offers the chance to see over 1,300 animals.

Several educational and cultural opportunities abound for residents. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, which offers permanent and rotating exhibits, is north of the neighborhood. The John Wornall House Museum, an 1858 home that was used as a Civil War hospital, is preserved and now serves as a museum in the northwestern area of South Kansas City. The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center, and the Toy & Miniature Museum of Kansas City are at its north.
