Morningside Neighborhood

Morningside is a Kansas City, Missouri neighborhood located east of Trolley Track Trail and west of Oak Street. It extends from East 59th Street in the north of East 65th Street in the south. This planned community has a very active neighborhood association.

In 1912 this first area was zoned as a residential neighborhood with only a few lots allotted for commercial, churches and multi-family houses. The rest were to be single family homes, with a minimum value range between $3000 and $7500. For the early 20th century, such a price range established Morningside as upper class neighborhood.

The west border of the neighborhood is the very popular Trolley Track Trail. The 6.5-mile trail run though central Kansas City and provides a safe place for bikers, joggers, and walkers to get away from street traffic. The trail is about ten feet wide and is paved with crushed limestone.

Main Street is the neighborhood’s commercial hub. Here residents can find a grocery store, a service station and a variety of small businesses. Sidewalks line both sides of the street.

Where the commercial district ends, large houses on sprawling, manicured lawns spring up. Along Main Street a wide variety of architectural styles can be found, but homes in this area are consistently two stories tall. Some wonderful 1920s Bungalow-style homes can be found in the Morningside neighborhood as well.

With double sidewalks and tall trees on most of Morningside’s streets, this neighborhood is highly walkable.
