River Market Neighborhood

Bordered by the Broadway Bridge on the west and the Heart of America Bridge on the east, the River Market neighborhood is one of Kansas City’s most historic neighborhoods. Once known as Westport Landing because its dock on the Missouri River was used for the exchange of goods, this neighborhood is quite rich in history and culture. Today, the neighborhood’s old brick streets, historic buildings, and decorative street lamps bring back the ambiance of a bygone era.

Located within the River Market neighborhood is the famous City Market, the region’s largest farmer’s market. It boasts more than 140 vendors. Fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, baked goods, and local crafts are available there every Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine, year round. The market is situated at the intersection of 5th and Walnut Streets.

The Arabia Steamboat museum off Grand Boulevard offers a taste of what frontier life was like in the 1800s. The Arabia was a side-wheel steamer, known for carrying passengers and cargo up the Missouri river. In 1856, this steamboat struck a tree snag and sank just north of Kansas City. Buried beneat a cornfield, it was recovered in 1988. Today, visitors to the museum can admire the dishware, clothing, and even bottled food found inside the Arabia.

The Berkley Riverfront Park located just a few blocks away from River Market offers pedestrians walkways and bike paths. Its trails are part of Kansas City’s Heritage Trail System.

The River Market neighborhood offers dining, entertainment, and shopping all in one place. It is also conveniently located just a few blocks north of downtown Kansas City.
