Rockhill Neighborhood
Bounded by Rockhill Terrace along with 44th Street on the north, Pierce Street on the south, Troost Avenue on the east and Oak Street on the west, is the Rockhill neighborhood. It is the oldest neighborhood in Kansas City. It all began when William Rockhill Nelson, a real estate developer and founder of the newspaper the Kansas City Star, moved to Kansas City in 1880 in search of fame and fortune. He transformed an area of farmland just south of downtown Kansas City into a neighborhood, now known as ”Rockhill District,” consisting of over 100 homes.
Today, Nelson’s work can be appreciated by admiring the eight historic homes lined up on Pierce Street. Fifty-three other homes designed by Nelson are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Nelson requested in his will that, following the death of his wife and daughter, his own mansion was to be torn down and replaced with the Nelson Atkins Museum, an art museum.
The Rockhill neighborhood is close to several parks. Frank A. Theis Park, across from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, was also part of William Rockhill Nelson estate. Among its amenities are walking trails, a natural amphitheater and a rain garden. Located right beside the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is Southmoreland Park, a perfect park for walking dogs or just lying back and relaxing. Finally, Gillham Park, along Gillham Road in the neighboring Hyde Park neighborhood, features a playground, pool, and green space. Just less than a mile from Rockhill is the famous Country Club Plaza offering shopping, restaurants and architecture reflecting the style of Seville, Spain.
Parents of school age children can choose from Belmont Montessori School, Paseo High School and Troost Elementary School and more. Older students may enjoy the convenience of the University of Missouri at Kansas City just a few blocks away, or the Kansas City Art Institute which attracts artists from all over the United States and Europe.
