Sheffield Neighborhood

The Sheffield neighborhood has solid blue-collar origins. Steelworkers with jobs in nearby foundries settled in the neighborhood towards the end of the nineteenth century. Sheffield, England was already world famous as a manufacturing center for steel, and gave the neighborhood its name. Sheffield, Kansas City is a mature neighborhood now, full of a wide variety of interesting old homes set in gently rolling terrain that rises at its eastern end to hilly Sheffield Park.

Less than three miles east of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, Sheffield is bounded on the north and northwest by Wilson Road, on the east by Winchester Avenue, on the south by Twelfth Street, and on the northwest by the tracks of the Kansas City Terminal Railway. The zip code for the neighborhood is 64125.

Sheffield is located less than one mile south of the east end of gorgeous North Terrace Park, the city park designed and constructed between 1893 and 1915 by George Edward Kessler. Part of his successful plan to make Kansas City one of the Midwest’s leading cities, the park still thrives. It often has car-free weekends, when it takes on a festival air. Any day, though, North Terrace Park is a great place for recreation.

Right in the neighborhood, Sheffield Park has ball fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts, as well as paths through well-shaded lawns. About a mile south of Sheffield, the hilly Blue Valley Park has a lake with ice skating in winter and stocked fishing in summer. However, the narrow little-traveled streets of Sheffield are a fine destination for a walk in themselves. It’s a homey neighborhood and no-one needs to leave it for relaxation.
