Westwood was laid out by real estate developer J.C. Nichols in the early twentieth century. Famous for his contributions to the Kansas City metropolitan landscape, he produced planned upscale communities that remain graceful and charming.

Westwood is bounded by Mission Road on the east, County Line Road on the north, Stateline Road, West Forty-Eighth Terrace and Rainbow Road on the east, and West Fifty-Third and Johnson Drive on the south. The zip code for Westwood is 66205.

Westwood streets are peaceful and well-groomed. They are lined with prime examples of Craftsman Bungalows, Prairie Style homes, and Shirtwaist houses, two-tone houses with stone or brick on the bottom and wood on the top floor. Each seems only improved by time. Westwood homeowners plainly cherish their community.

The city holds a giant garage sale twice a year. In summer, outdoor movies are shown in Joe E. Dennis Park, or at city hall in case of rain. A city foundation offers scholarships for outstanding high school students each year, and another for an older student redirecting his or her career.

Dennis Park is one local recreation spot, and Westwood Park is another place to walk the dog or picnic. South of Westwood, Mission Hills Country Club is a private golf course fostered by J.C. Nichols in 1914. Along with nearby Indian Hills Club and the Kansas City Club, these are probably the most admired golf courses in the area.
