Bellefontaine Neighbors Neighborhood

Tracing its beginnings all the way back to the Louisiana Purchase, Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri is located in one of the most historical districts within the city of St. Louis.

The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory in 1803, during the reign of Napoleon of France. A mere one year later, the US entered into a treaty with a group of Native Americans consisting of the Sac and Fox tribes. The agreement ensured that a Trading Post would be established within easy traveling distance from both tribes. The general location of the fort was on the south bank of the Missouri River, four miles west of where the mighty river converged with the mightiest river, the Mississippi. The name of the fort? Bellefontaine.

Fast-forward to 1808: Fort Bellefontaine relocated to Fort Osage, and the soldiers who had commandeered the fort left the area. Subsequently, land grants officially issued by French, Spanish, and American administrators facilitated the purchase of acreage to prospective landowners.

Now super-fast-forward to the 21st century: the city’s cultural and historical heritage are defined by continued, albeit thoughtful, growth.

Additionally, perhaps no other St. Louis community is as convenient to as many areas of interest as is Bellefontaine Neighbors. Centrally located, the city is within 20 minutes of not only downtown St. Louis, but is also easily accessible to St. Charles, Lambert International Airport and Edwardsville, Illinois.

The city’s environs also have easy access to I-270, a corridor that provides ease of transport throughout the entire metro area.

Bellefontaine Neighbors provides potential residents a suburban refuge from much of the detritus of big city commerce and traffic, while affording them access to the historical richness and culture of one of the most vibrant urban areas in the country.
