Saint Louis at a Glance
Benton Park Neighborhood
Located in eastern St. Louis, the Benton Park neighborhood was declared a federal Historic District in 1985. The neighborhood is full of old homes, many rehabilitated and others awaiting refurbishment. This mix of residential housing includes buildings ranging from single-family homes to Victorian mansions, from townhouses to commercial structures.
Bounded by Gravois Avenue to the north, Cherokee Street to the south, I-55 on the east, and Jefferson Avenue on the west, the neighborhood’s history has been a constant evolution of purpose. In the 1800s, the land was used as St. Louis’s first city cemetery, but the remains were relocated in 1865, and the neighborhood was renamed for US Senator Thomas Hart Benton, who championed the westward expansion of the US (which became known as ‘Manifest Destiny”).
The Benton Park neighborhood soon came to the attention of local breweries, which valued the caves underneath the land and found them to be perfect for storing beer. Lemp Brewery (which eventually became Falstaff) was located in Benton Park. The Lemp Mansion (home to the Lemp family who owned the brewery) had a tunnel that led to the beer caves, which the family used to go to work each day.
Today the Lemp Mansion, located on DeMenil Place, has been renovated and converted to a restaurant and inn. In addition to providing fine dining and accommodation, the Lemp Mansion offers residents and visitors paranormal tours, as well as special events and performances.
Benton Park residents not only have tree-lined streets with beautiful homes, but enjoy access to four parks within their community: Benton Park, Carnegie Park, Cherokee Park, and Freemont Park. In addition to these neighborhood green spaces, Benton Park residents have easy access to downtown St. Louis and area universities (such as Washington and St. Louis).
