Central West End Neighborhood

The cosmopolitan St. Louis neighborhood of Central West End encompasses a broad stretch of land west of Midtown. With a lively mix of housing that includes stunning mansions, single-family homes, and luxury apartments, this neighborhood is one of the most desirable in the city. Bounded by Delmar Boulevard to the north, I-64 to the south, Vandeventer Avenue to the east, and Union Boulevard to the west, the neighborhood is centrally located and close to Forest Park.

The area came into its first flowering back in the 1890s when it was the up-and-coming community for the “Big Cinch,” those St. Louis leaders who determined city matters as successful business executives. Among the neighborhood’s most famous residents were writers Tennessee Williams and TS Eliot.

Today, the Eliot House is just one among many historic structures populating the neighborhood. Another important Central West End landmark is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. This religious monument to beauty took half a century or more to complete. Modeled on the Hagia Sophia, it has a rose window designed by Tiffany and the world’s largest collection of mosaics.

The neighborhood today is a trendy mix of residential housing and small businesses (including boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and cafes) that is reminiscent of Europe. In fact, Central West End residents describe their community as “a little Europe, a little New York, and a whole lot of St. Louis.”

More arts and culture, as well as a great recreational resource, can be found in Forest Park. In addition to its attractions (such as the St. Louis Museum of Art and the St. Louis Zoo), this huge urban park offers residents plenty of options for working out. From tennis courts to soccer fields, from trails for running to baseball diamonds, the park’s amenities are unprecedented.
