Columbus Square Neighborhood

The Columbus Square, Saint Louis, Missouri, neighborhood is bordered by Cole Street, Tucker Boulevard, Interstate 70 and Cass Avenue. This neighborhood has a long history of immigrant settlements beginning with the German Catholics and later by Irish immigrants. During the 1800s the neighborhood was almost entirely comprised of row houses used by laborers, which were two to three-story row homes.

Columbus Square has had many nicknames over the years including Crabber Alley, Wild Cat Chute and Castle Thunder which mainly referred to the challenging living conditions. In the 1930s the Neighborhood Gardens were built and in 1952 Cochran Gardens was built as public housing. Between 1985 and 1987, Columbus Square Town homes and Castles developments were built. The development of downtown Saint Louis has allowed Columbus Square to continue to develop into a centerpiece of Saint Louis. The Shrine of Saint Joseph has been restored and the ongoing renovation and development of the Bottle District is adding new life to Columbus Square.

The Bottle District has a fascinating history that dates back a considerable amount of time – the “Vess” soda bottle overlooks this district. However, what is even more fascinating is the number of antique bottles that were discovered under buildings and sidewalks. Many of these bottles are believed to date back some 150 years.

The Columbus Square neighborhood is located close to the Edward Jones Dome as well as America’s Center Convention Complex. Both of these facilities host public events including home and auto shows, sporting events, and various other events. Columbus Square offers something for everyone, whether they are looking for a walkable area, pet-friendly area, shopping or cultural events.
