Lafayette Square Neighborhood
The Lafayette Square neighborhood is located just south of downtown St. Louis and within walking distance to the Soulard Market. It is a registered National Historic District and is the oldest historic district in the city. The community received that distinction in 1972. In 1973, Congress placed Lafayette Square on the National Register of Historic Places.
This neighborhood is situated in ZIP code 63104. Its boundaries are Chouteau Avenue to the north, Interstate 44 to the south, Dolman Street to the east, and South Jefferson Avenue to the west.
The focal point of the neighborhood is 330-acre Lafayette Park, which was platted in 1836. It is the only land in the city that was never privately owned, and it is the city’s oldest park, as well as the first park west of the Mississippi River.
Lafayette Park has a rich history that includes some notable local individuals as well as people who were known nationally. Montgomery Blair, the Postmaster General under Abraham Lincoln, lived in the neighborhood, as did Louis Brandeis, who served on the U.S. Supreme Court. Charles Nagel, the Secretary of Commerce and Labor under President Taft, was another famous person who called Lafayette Square home.
The Lafayette Square neighborhood contains both rentals and owner-occupied homes. Most properties are condos, townhouses, or single-family homes. Most of the structures are built of brick. The oldest homes in the community date from around 1880, while some residences were built as recently as 2007. Residents have banded together through a restoration committee to renovate the spectacular historic homes in the neighborhood.
