LaSalle Park Neighborhood

LaSalle Park is an historic neighborhood in southeastern St. Louis, Missouri, within Missouri County. Situated along the southern edge of the downtown area, together with the neighborhoods of Soulard and Lafayette Square, this community is considered part of “Old Frenchtown.”

The zip code for LaSalle Park is 63104. It is bounded by Chouteau Avenue on the north and South Tucker Boulevard on the west. To the south and east, it extends to Interstate 55. As of 2000, the community was home to more than 1,400 residents.

In the early 1970s, the LaSalle Park neighborhood was redeveloped to help restore some of the historic touches that were once found here, including street lamps, brick sidewalks, and extensive landscaping. The distinctive architecture in LaSalle Park remains a mix of Federalist and Victorian, which can be seen in both the residences and the neighborhood’s commercial buildings. Current guidelines for urban renewal require that all new construction conform to this aesthetic, which helps to preserve the historic feel of the neighborhood. LaSalle Park is also known for its tree-lined streets, which lend further beauty to the community’s unique architecture.

Schools serving LaSalle Park include Peabody Elementary School on South 14th Street. Parks within community bounds include Ray Leisure Park, which features a recreation center with an indoor gymnasium and swimming pool. There is also an outdoor playground, but the rest of the park is devoted to open space for outdoor games and sports, picnicking or relaxation.

A variety of commercial options can be found near LaSalle Park, thanks in part to its close proximity to the interstate. Two attractions within walking distance southwest of the neighborhood are the Darkness Haunted Theme Park and Historic Soulard Farmers’ Market.

Downtown St. Louis is less than four miles from LaSalle Park, as is the St. Louis University.
