Lindenwood Park Neighborhood
Located in St. Louis, Missouri and St. Louis County, Lindenwood Park is an older neighborhood that clearly demonstrates St. Louis craftsmanship. Lined with gingerbread houses, manicured lawns, and uniform trees lining the streets, Lindenwood Park is a neighbor-friendly area rich in history.
Lindenwood developer, Sam T. Rathell, began the journey of creating this neighborhood during the early twentieth century. Rapid development of Lindenwood Park occurred during the 1920s through the 1930s, but it wasn’t until the 1950s when housing development was near completion.
The streets throughout this part of southwest St. Louis are named for prominent citizens who lived in St. Louis during the development stage. Oleatha Rathell is given credit for naming some of the streets in Lindenwood Park – one she named after herself. Two key figures during the 1880s were also memorialized with street names. Hancock Avenue is named for Civil War General Winfield Scott Hancock, and Arthur Avenue is for Chester A. Arthur, who became the 21st president.
The Lindenwood Park neighborhood is situated south of Arsenal Street, north of Chippewa Street, east of Interstate 44 and west of Interstate 55. Approximately five miles east is the Missouri-Illinois state line. The Lindenwood Neighborhood Association was founded in 1930 to help preserve and promote this historical area of St. Louis. Containing mostly single-family homes, there are also some apartment buildings.
Many of the homes are brick and/or rock exterior; however there are some unusual houses, too. Some of the businesses in Lindenwood Park have retro appeal, although some newer chain stores have moved into the area. The neighborhood is surrounded by public parks, including the 14-acre Lindenwood Park.
Encompassed in the 63139, 63109 and 63119 zip codes, Lindenwood Park contains many popular shopping, dining and entertainment venues. Neighborhood residents also participate in the annual National Night Out.
