Mark Twain Neighborhood

Driving into the Mark Twain neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri, you might feel like you have driven through a time machine. Houses built by German immigrants from 1900-1930 populate the neighborhood streets. Interstate 70 separates the two sections of the Mark Twain neighborhood, the residential and the industrial areas.

The community shares its name with the local elementary school, Mark Twain Elementary. The school was designed by William B. Ittner, a Saint Louis architect responsible for designing 430 schools across the country. Ittner, who died in 1936, designed 75 of the buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. The Mark Twain School, built in 1911, is 100 years old.

Between the Mark Twain community and the Mississippi River, a significant piece of history is located. The Bellefontaine Cemetery was established in 1849. It became the first rural cemetery west of the Mississippi. The first interment took place in 1850. Many notable people, including Adolphus Busch of Anheuser-Busch fame, have been laid to rest at Bellefontaine Cemetery. Today the cemetery is open to everyone and is a place of solitude in a busy city.

On the southwest side of Mark Twain on the west side of Interstate 70, you will find fifty-one acres dedicated to outdoor fun. Penrose Park boasts three baseball fields, two soccer fields, and four tennis courts. The park also offers an opportunity for bicyclists to enjoy the city in a safe environment. For family fun, there is a playground and a pavilion.
