Midtown Neighborhood

The Midtown area is situated within ZIP code 63103. It is said to be located in the geographic heart of St. Louis. The boundaries of this neighborhood are Compton Avenue and Chouteau Avenue to the south, South Jefferson Avenue to the east, South Vandeventer Avenue to the west, and Delmar Boulevard and Olive Street to the north.

This area is sometimes described as the second downtown. Important cultural attractions such as the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Sheldon Concert Hall, Fox Theatre, and the general theater district are directly to the north.

The Midtown area has undergone significant changes over the years. Once described as the thriving arts district, it suffered a substantial decline during the 1970s and 1980s. During the 1990s, thanks to an influx of many millions of dollars that St. Louis University invested both in the community and in rebuilding its campus, the neighborhood has regained or surpassed the level of its former glory days.

In addition to St. Louis University, other academic institutions such as Harris Stowe State University and the Aquinas Institute of Theology call Midtown their home. The neighborhood is also the location of several art museums, including the Contemporary Arts Museum, St. Louis and the Museum of Contemporary Religious Arts. One of the area’s oldest structures is the Third Baptist Church, which has graced the corner of Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue since 1885.

Although this neighborhood is not primarily a residential area, it contains some fabulous apartment buildings. There is a high rise building on Grand Boulevard that offers its residents fabulous views of the city, and the GW Loft Apartments are located on West Washington Avenue, within the heart of the West Washington Loft District. The building offers a combination of retail and living spaces.
