Near Southside Neighborhood
The Near Southside neighborhood is situated in zip code 63104. The south Saint Louis neighborhood is bounded by South Tucker Boulevard to the east, Chouteau Avenue to the north, Dolman Street to the west, and the Interstate 55/Interstate 44 interchange to the south.
The neighborhood is referred to as the Peabody/Darst/Webbe neighborhood by the city. That is because it is situated in the area where three public housing buildings once stood. Those buildings were known individually as Clinton Peabody Terrace, Darst and Webbe.
Some of the Victorian homes and row houses have been nicely rehabbed. One of the finest structures in the neighborhood is the building that housed the former Eden Publishing Company. It was built in 1896 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though damaged by a tornado in 1896, the building was repaired and remained unchanged for the next thirty years.
In 1929, the Synod building was built just west of the Eden Building. The Art Deco design of that building was incorporated into the facade of the original Eden Building with terra cotta and brick. The building is now known as Eden Lofts and houses some fabulous loft-style residences.
The former run-down high rises that made up the housing projects have been torn down and replaced with attractive brick townhouses and apartments, and the area is clean and neatly landscaped. The former St. Louis City Hospital that was built in the 1890s was placed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks in 2001. It consisted of several buildings, and those remaining buildings have been turned into functioning spaces.
The hilltop building that was built in the Georgian Revival style is now called the Georgian, and it was converted into condominiums that offer great views of the city. Another building became the Palladium, one of the city’s premier event spaces.
