Oakland Neighborhood

Oakland is a small city in St. Louis County, about 12 miles southwest of the city of St. Louis, Missouri. It has an area of 0.60 square miles and lies within the 63122 zip code.

On its official website, the city of Oakland touts itself as “one of St. Louis County’s best kept secrets.” That could be attributed to its several miles of sidewalk-lined, tree-rich streets and its sparsely placed population of fewer than 2,000 residents.

Crestwood serves as its southern border, while Glendale borders the city to the north. Kirkwood borders Oakland to its west, and Webster Groves borders the community to its east.

The majority of homes are single-family, detached units of varying styles, from historic World War II “kit” homes to more modern ones designed by such renowned architects as Paul Marti, Robert Schutt, and Harris Armstrong. There are also several apartment complexes and condo buildings available.

There are several parks located within Oakland. The popular Backstoppers Park, at Melshire and Holmes, has a playground, picnic tables, open parkland, and a gazebo. Loewnau Park, at Oakland and Sappington, has impressive landscaping, a playground, park benches, and picnic tables. Monaco Park, at Sappington and Lockwood, is a small park with a miniature soccer field, playground equipment, and a gazebo.

Several wealthier Oakland residents belong to the Westborough Country Club, which lies in the northern part of the city. Its offers sprawling, well-manicured golf courses, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center, an aquatic center, and a members-only clubhouse with a fine-dining restaurant.
