Bryan Mullanphy, son of America’s “first millionaire,” was born in Saint Louis. He lived a very colorful life, including a stint as mayor in St. Louis. Upon his death, he left the city money to help emigrants and travelers on their way west. The city established the Mullanphy Emigrant Home, located near the edge of Old North St. Louis. Today, the restored building connects downtown to Old North Saint Louis.
