Southwest Garden Neighborhood

West of the Missouri Botanical Garden in Saint Louis lies the 70-block neighborhood of Southwest Garden. Saint Louis is home to the Gateway Arch, the nation’s tallest memorial. The city is also home to historic neighborhoods, lush parks, professional sports teams, and museums.

Interstate 44 and Columbia Avenue border the neighborhood of Southwest Garden on the north. Tower Grove Park borders it on the south, with Hampton Avenue on the south and Tower Grove Avenue on the east. Southwest Garden is a mix of bungalows, turn-of-the-century homes, townhomes, and several blocks of apartments.

Southwest Garden sits within walking distance of Tower Grove Park. The wooded Tower Grove Park, established in 1868, has more than eight thousand trees and shrubs. With Victorian pavilions, ornate fountains, and beautiful landscaped areas, the park is a picturesque retreat in the center of the bustling city. Facilities within the park include ball fields, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, a playground, and even carriage rides. It is the second largest park in Saint Louis.

Less than three miles to the north of Southwest Garden sits the sprawling Forest Park. The largest park in Saint Louis at 1,300 acres, Forest is home to multiple lakes. Chiefly among these is Jefferson Lake, which is well stocked for fishing. The park is also the site of the Missouri History Museum, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Saint Louis Science Center/Planetarium, and the Saint Louis Zoo. Visitors to Forest Park can enjoy ice skating, tennis, soccer, basketball, handball, and softball/baseball. In the center of the park sits The Muny, a municipal theater with an 11,500-seat amphitheater.

The neighborhood of Southwest Garden is close to the Forest Park Hospital, Saint Louis University, and Washington University at Saint Louis. It is only six miles from The Galleria, one of the area’s largest shopping venues.
