Nearly one quarter of all Nebraska residents live in one county: Douglas. Founded in 1854 along the Missouri River, Douglas County was the site of the Lone Tree Ferry, which took Westward-bound travelers across the river. A small town began to emerge around the crossing site that would eventually become the seat of Douglas County and the largest city in Nebraska: Omaha.
Omaha has emerged as a Midwestern powerhouse, with a strong economy and high quality of living. Several Fortune 500 companies are located in Omaha, including Mutual of Omaha, Union Pacific, Kellogg Company, and ConAgra Foods. Other companies headquartered in Omaha include Werner Enterprises and TD Ameritrade. Offutt Air Force Base, built in 1918 and home to the 55th Wing, is also located in Omaha.
Douglas County is home to more than 150 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Anheuser-Busch Beer Depot was built in 1887 and is the last building of what was once the Krug Brewery, the largest of Omaha’s original brewing companies. The historic Astro Theater was built in 1926 and is still considered one of the most elegant theaters in the country. The Gold Coast Historic District is located in Midtown Omaha and the buildings in the 30-block area were built between 1880 and 1940. One of those buildings, Joslyn Castle, is a well-recognized landmark built in 1903.
Life in this part of the Midwest is punctuated with unique shopping destinations, elegant restaurants, beautiful parks, an amazing waterfront with a variety of activities, casinos, and all types of recreation from boating and swimming in the summer to cross-country skiing and sledding in the winter.
