Clark County, Nevada

Just as playwright Arthur Miller was most famous as the husband of the glamorous Marilyn Monroe, Clark County, Nevada is most famous for its most populous city, Las Vegas, also the county seat.

Located in the southern part of the state, Clark County had a population of almost two million at the time of the 2010 census, nearly three-quarters of Nevada’s residents. Millions more are tourists; forty million people visited Clark County in 2009, most seeking entertainment, casinos and shopping on the Las Vegas Strip.

Away from the glitter and nightlife, Clark County has unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation. In the winter, visitors will enjoy skiing at Mt. Charleston, just 45 minutes north of the city. In the summer, adventurers flock to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire and, of course, the Colorado River.

The Colorado River forms the county’s southeastern boundary, and Hoover Dam forms Lake Mead along much of its length. The lowest point in the state is located on the Colorado River just south of Laughlin in Clark County, where it flows out of Nevada and into California and Arizona.

Las Vegas is a valley surrounded by four mountain ranges, with nearby Mount Charleston being the highest at 11,918 feet. Other than the forests on Mount Charleston, the geography in Clark County is a desert: the mountains are mostly rocky with little vegetation.

The state-of-the art Clark County Shooting Park, operated by the Clark County Parks and Recreation Department, is located on 2,900 acres and is open daily, offering a range of services. On an unrelated note, those planning a special Elvis Presley impersonation wedding at one of the Strip’s chapels should make sure to review the information available regarding the state requirements, available on the Clark County website.
