Washoe County, Nevada
Situated along the Sierra Nevada Mountains in northwestern Nevada, Washoe County is a great place for those who enjoy being outdoors. The historic Bowers Mansion, located at Bowers Mansion Regional Park, features the 1864 mansion that was the home of a silver tycoon. Each of the mansion’s 16 rooms is furnished with Victorian antiques. The park surrounding the impressive mansion offers a seasonal pool, a playground, and picnic areas.
Reno, the seat of Washoe County, is a small city with big entertainment value. Casinos line the tourist-filled streets, and neon lights dazzle in the night sky. Not far from Lake Tahoe, Reno residents and visitors enjoy the plethora of ski resorts in the region. Tourism is a huge industry in the area, and many shops and restaurants cater to the area’s visitors. The University of Nevada, Reno opened in 1886 and is the oldest university in Nevada. While skiing and snowboarding are the sports the Lake Tahoe region is famous for, summer brings many additional outdoor adventures, such as windsurfing on Washoe Lake, biking along the many bike paths, fishing, camping, hiking, and swimming.
Washoe County includes the city of Sparks and several small communities, including Sun Valley, Washoe City, Wadsworth, Spanish Springs, Pleasant Valley, Cold Springs, Lemmon Valley-Golden Valley, and Incline Village-Crystal Bay.
