Hillsborough County, New Hampshire

Along the Massachusetts border in southern New Hampshire, Hillsborough County was established in 1769 as one of New Hampshire’s five original counties. It is the most heavily populated county in the state. Hillsborough County has two seats: Manchester and Nashua.

Manchester is the largest city in northern New England. It is located along the Merrimack River and is an award-winning city. It has been named one of the most tax-friendly, one of the least expensive, and one of the best cities to call home. Established in 1751, this beautiful city is also historic. It is home to the historic Palace Theater, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and the Currier Museum of Art. Universities located in Manchester include the University of New Hampshire at Manchester, Southern New Hampshire University, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, Hesser College, and Manchester Community College.

Nashua was incorporated in 1746 and is also an award-winning city. Its long history dates back to 1655, when it was established as a town for fur trading. Nashua is located along the Nashua and Merrimack Rivers and is the second-largest city in New Hampshire. Landmarks include the Abbot-Spalding House, the Hunt Memorial Library, the 1835 Nashua Cemetery, and the Manufacturing Co. Clock Tower.

The Wapack National Wildlife Refuge is just west of Nashua and includes 1,672 acres, including the North Pack Monadnock Mountain. A portion of the Wapack Trail winds through the refuge. Bird-watching is a popular pastime here, and some of the birds seen in the refuge include the hermit thrush, warblers, hawks, the peregrine falcon, ruffed grouse, and the scarlet tanager.

Other communities in Hillsborough County include Wilton, Windsor, Temple, Hollis, Litchfield, Hudson, Weare, Bedford, Bennington, Mason, Merrimack, Amherst, Mont Vernon, Pelham, Brookline, and Deering.
