Barnegat’s unusual name derives from the Dutch word Barende-gat, which means inlet with breakers. Henry Hudson named the nearby inlet when he sailed along the New Jersey coast in 1609. The first settlers arrived sometime around 1720.
Barnegat stretches from the inlet westward, just south of Toms River and roughly 50 miles east of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Barnegat is a beautiful location, filled with great shops, restaurants, and parks. Popular activities in Barnegat include boating, sailing, fishing, crabbing, swimming, beachcombing, and kayaking. Events include the popular Pirates Day, a celebration of Revolutionary War era pirates that includes live music, vendors, more.
From your new apartment in Barnegat, you can visit the historic downtown, a beautiful area filled with antique shops, art galleries, and plenty of historical architecture. And, in addition to gorgeous nearby beaches, your Barnegat apartment puts you near the Barnegat Branch Trail, a 3.1-mile trail that will eventually total 15.6 miles as it follows the old tracks of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Cloverdale Farm County Park is an 80-acre park that includes cranberry bogs.
