Camden County, New Jersey

Located in the Delaware Valley in the coastal plains along the Delaware River, Camden County is in the western part of New Jersey, across the river from Philadelphia. Camden County formed in 1844, carved from Gloucester County. The county seat is Camden.

The city of Camden is one of the largest in the state. Founded in 1626, it has a long and sometimes turbulent history. The Walter Rand Transportation Center is a hub for the New Jersey Transit system, SEPTA, and Amtrak. Camden is located on the Delaware River and the waterfront is home to many attractions, such as the Adventure Aquarium, the historic Walt Whitman House, Campbell’s Field, the USS New Jersey, and the Susquehanna Bank Center – a large open-air concert amphitheater. Campbell’s Field is home to the Camden Riversharks baseball team and the Rutgers-Camden baseball team. Camden is home to the Campbell Soup Company, L-3 Communications, and Rutgers University-Camden.

Part of the Great Egg Harbor National Scenic and Recreational River is located in Camden County. It is a 129-mile river system within the Pineland National Reserve. It is notable for its color — resembling tea – that comes from the dissolved iron and tannin in the river. This location is a popular location for bird watchers. Backpacking, biking, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and kayaking are also popular activities in the park.

Parks in Camden County include the 151-acre Berlin Park, located on the great Egg Harbor River. The park contains two lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, an in-line hockey court, softball fields, playgrounds, a bike path, and about five miles of nature trails.

Pennypacker Park is historic site famous for its dinosaur – in 1858, the world’s first nearly complete dinosaur skeleton was found by William Foulke. Today, the location is marked with a commemorative stone. Just beyond the marker is the deep ravine where the Hadrosaurus was discovered. Visitors can hike to the bottom of the ravine and imagine what this important “first” must have been like.

Rowing events are held at Cooper River Park, a nearly 350-acre park spread out across four townships. It contains a cross-country course, a boathouse, a boat launch, the Camden County Golf Academy, the Cooper River Yacht Club, fishing areas, the Jack Curtis Stadium, picnic areas, softball fields, a playground, bike paths, a miniature golf course, a sculpture garden, and a dog park.
