Essex County, New Jersey

A diverse county in income, population, and ethnicity, Essex County reflects the greater New York Metro area as a whole. Essex income levels range from around $20,000 in some locations to nearly $200,000 in others. The county seat, Newark, is also the largest city. It is a major hub for shipping, air, and rail.

The county was officially formed in 1683 and has over 160 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including Weequahic Park, home to the largest lake in Essex County. Other sites include the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, the fifth-largest cathedral in North America, and the Victorian Krueger Mansion, built in 1888.

Essex County contains several universities and colleges, including Rutgers-Newark, Seton Hall University, Montclair State University, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Townships in Essex include Belleville, Montclair, Verona, Cedar Grove, Millburn, Maplewood, and Livingston. Boroughs include Roseland, Caldwell, Essex Fells, and Glen Ridge.

Essex County is home to several parks including the oldest county park in the nation, Branch Brook Park, located in Newark. The park, established in 1895, contains 360 acres. It is the largest public park in the city. The park contains over 4,000 cherry trees and is home to the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, held in April.
