The Hudson River flows along the eastern edge of Hudson County and separating this part of New Jersey from Manhattan. It is part of the New York Metro area and contains the iconic Ellis Island and Liberty Island. The largest city and the county seat of Hudson County is Jersey City.
Jersey City is an important port with 11 miles of waterfront. The Port of New York and New Jersey is the busiest port on the East Coast and the third busiest in the nation. Ferry services have been continuously operating since the 18th century and include the Staten Island Ferry, a free transport of over 75,000 people a day. Other important transportation hubs include the New Jersey Transit system, Penn Station, and PATH. The New York metro area is by far the most walkable area in the country with an extensive rail, subway, ferry, and bus system.
Liberty State Park is the country’s largest park. It is located across the Upper New York Bay from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The park is a nationally protected area that consists of 1,212 acres. Some of the features include a 36-acre nature preserve, the Liverty Science Center, and two memorials: a Holocaust memorial and a September 11 memorial. Concerts, events, and festivals are often held at the park. Ellis Island was an immigrant inspection station from 1892 to 1954. Most of the island is located in New Jersey with a small portion belonging to New York. The Immigration Museum is housed in the station’s main building, which was built in 1900 after the original structure burned down. Liberty Island is home to the Statue of Liberty, a National Monument.
Hudson County contains several other parks, including Lincoln Park, Hudson County Park, and Mercer Park. Riverwalks, shops, restaurants, museums, theaters, bars, concert halls, Broadway shows, and countless businesses keep this area busy and thriving.
Cities in the county include Hoboken, Union City, and Bayonne. Towns include Guttenberg, Secaucus, West New York, Harrison, North Bergen, Weehawken, and Kearny. East Newark, a borough, is also located in Hudson County.
