Mercer County, New Jersey

Affluent, historic, and home to major universities, Mercer County is a popular New Jersey destination. It is considered part of the New York metro area. Trenton serves as the county seat and the state capital.

Princeton University is one of the nine colleges established before the American Revolution, the so-called “Colonial Colleges.” It is an Ivy League research university, consistently ranked as one of the best in the country. Along with Harvard and Yale, Princeton is one of the “Big Three.” It was established in 1746. Mercer County is also home to Rider University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Thomas Edison State College. The College of New Jersey and Mercer County Community College complete this well-educated area’s list of schools.

Trenton’s history is long and fascinating. Settled sometime in the early 1700s, Trenton became the capital of New Jersey in 1790. It is the site of George Washington’s first victory during the Revolutionary War, and for a short time served as the nation’s capital. During the late 19th century, Trenton became a manufacturing hub, leading the way in the production of wire rope, ceramics, cigars, and rubber. The Lower Trenton Bridge still contains the slogan from that era, “Trenton Makes, The World Takes.”

Mercer County is home to over 100 historic sites. These include Grover Cleveland’s home, Westland Mansion, located in Princeton, Hopewell Station built in 1876 and located in Hopewell, and Morven Museum and Garden, which was built in 1730 by Richard Stockton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It is located in Princeton.

If you are looking for an apartment in Mercer County, a few of the great communities include West Windsor Township, Robbinsville, Pennington, Lawrence Township, Hopewell Borough, Hamilton Township, and East Windsor Township.
