Trenton’s history is long and fascinating. Settled sometime in the early 1700s, Trenton became the capital of New Jersey in 1790. It is the site of George Washington’s first victory during the Revolutionary War, and for a short time served as the nation’s capital. During the late 19th century, Trenton became a manufacturing hub, leading the way in the production of wire rope, ceramics, cigars, and rubber. The Lower Trenton Bridge still contains the slogan from that era, “Trenton Makes, The World Takes.”
