The Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook contains miles of beaches along the ocean and bay. Containing 26,000 acres, this park is popular for swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, and camping. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse was first lit in 1764. At the time, it was just 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook. Due to ocean currents moving sand along the coast, the lighthouse is now about a mile and a half from the tip. It is a National Historic Landmark and is maintained by the US Coast Guard. Other historic sites in Monmouth County include Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Historic Walnford, Twin Lights, Sea Girt Lighthouse, the Stephen Crane House, and Woodrow Wilson Hall.
