The Sandy Hook Lighthouse was first lit in 1764. At the time, it was just 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook. Due to ocean currents moving sand along the coast, the lighthouse is now about a mile and a half from the tip. It is a National Historic Landmark and is maintained by the US Coast Guard. Other historic sites in Monmouth County include Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Historic Walnford, Twin Lights, Sea Girt Lighthouse, the Stephen Crane House, and Woodrow Wilson Hall.
Allaire State Park contains a 19th-century iron-making town called Allaire Village. The park contains over 200 species of plants, and the Manasquan River flows through the park. The 1,569-acre Cheesequake State Park is popular for fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking, and biking. Winter activities include snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding.
