Union County, New Jersey

In 1857, a large portion of Essex County was taken to form Union County. Since then, Union County has grown to become one of the most densely populated and wealthiest counties in the country. This New Jersey county lies along the eastern shore and is part of the New York metro area.

Elizabeth, the county seat, was founded in 1665 as part of the Elizabethtown Tract, named for the wife of Vice Admiral Sir George Carteret, one of the two original Proprietors of the New Jersey Colony. Elizabeth became part of the new Union County in 1857. Historic Midtown is a beautiful location, filled with historic sites and markers. Other historic sites include the First Presbyterian Church, the Union County Courthouse, Boxwood Hall, and the Ritz Theater.

Union County is located between Essex County (to the north) and Middlesex County (to the south). This diverse county is filled with historic sites, shops, theaters, museums, and restaurants. With its proximity to Manhattan, the area is very pedestrian-friendly with easy access to New Jersey Transit. The Elizabeth Station is a gorgeous building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The station is a stop for the Northeast Corridor Line and the North Jersey Coast Line. Port Elizabeth is a major part of the Port of New York and New Jersey, one of the busiest ports in the world.

With the very best in nightlife and entertainment located a short train ride away, residents of Union County can enjoy the city that never sleeps, or they can enjoy quieter activities close to home, such as golf courses, ice skating rinks, and beautiful parks.
